When using different versions of the Amiga Workbench operating system (typically later versions than a specific Amiga model was originally shipped with from the factory) it is often necessary to install a later compatible version of the Amiga's Kickstart ROM chip.
This is a fairly common requirement, for example, many Amiga 500s shipped with version 1.3 of the Kickstart ROM and likewise, Amiga 600s came with 2.04 or 2.05 as standard.
For users wishing to enable Internet access on their machines, boot from certain hard drives, or add various hardware upgrades, many of the installation manuals specified a requirement of Workbench 3.1 or later. In order to install Workbench 3.1 (or other more recent operating system versions, such as Amiga OS 3.2) is became necessary to fit a later Kickstart ROM chip version to achieve 100% compatibility.
Likewise, in certain cases (often for early Amiga 500 based games) later machines such as the A600 and A1200 required downgrading from their later Amiga Kickstart versions, to the earlier version 1.3 variant.
